Located in the center of the capital-Katmandu, the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) of Nepal lies in the central part of a bowl-shaped valley with an altitude of approximately 1400m in Katmandu and is about six kilometer away from the city center. TIA is the only international airport in Nepal.
TIA has been put into operation since 1949. It is the main gateway for tourists to Nepal and also the main base for domestic civil aviation. The airport owns a runway (3050m x 60m); one bituminous concrete parallel taxiway (1950m x 23m) with five taxiway exits (namely A, B, C, D and E). The denomination of the runway mentioned above is 02-20.
So far, the runway has been updated for three times in its history, with the latest updating in 1995. The air traffic operation of TIA added international flights which are able to handle 3,511,314 passengers’ movement and provided 68,536 domestic flights which are able to handle 1,450,558 passengers’ movement.
Generally speaking, the airports receives over 262 flights during 6:00 am to 2:00 at midnight per day, 75 of which are international ones.
Till now, the durable year, the operating frequency of the pavement as well as the take-off weight have gone beyond the preliminary design standards and the road condition is in a poor status.
At the same time, the pavement is not enough to carry the wide-bodied aircraft due to the aging asphalt base of the runway; the damage of asphalt pavement is quickly and obviously reflected on the upper surface, resulting in cracks and other surface damage. The emergence of these problems continuously endangers the safe operation of the airport.
For this purpose, AVIC-ENG Airport Engineering Co., Ltd signed a non-suspending construction contract with Nepal which aims at solving the following problems: indentation of the runway and the taxiway; bumps and hollows of the parallel taxiway; surface cracking (longitudinal/large) of the runway and the taxiway.
The contract concentrates on repairing works as well as the milling works which haven’t been implemented during the improvement project for the pavement. What’s more, it also focuses on problems such as poor quality, friction and other problems.
In the future, a brand new runway and taxiway pavement which meet the needs of large wide-bodied aircrafts for taking off and landing as well as the daily ultra-high volume of taking off and landing operations will be presented to the world.

The TIA was put into use in 1949 and it possesses one runway, one bituminous concrete parallel taxiway and five taxiway exits. The airport serves as the main access for the visitors to Nepal and the main base for the domestic civil aviation. Besides, it’s also the sole airport in Nepal which is equipped with the runway for the take-off and landing of the international flights and is able to handle the operation of medium and large-size passenger aircraft. In recent years, due to the service life of the pavement, frequency of take-off and landing and the take-off weight and due to the poor road conditions such as cracks and swelling, the airport has been unable to meet the needs of increasing air services.
In this case, AVIC-KDN Airport Engineering Co., Ltd signed the non-suspension construction contract with the Nepal party by taking advantage of its professional non-suspension construction technologies.
The reconstruction and upgrading activities are carried out on a daily basis during 22:00-08:00 next day when the airport is shut down.

Paving Construction for the Runway Surface Course of TIA
AVIC-KDN Airport Engineering Co., Ltd began to pave the runway surface on Jun. 11th, 2019. The construction area is located at the turning pad of the runway 20 end, with ac-16 (modified asphalt concrete) used at the end of the runway for 120m and SMA-13 (Stone Mastic Asphalt) used in the middle.
The airstrip end adopts the air-graded AC-16 asphalt mixture as suspension (coarse aggregate) air-graded, which can effectively prevent the torque generated by aircraft turning from damaging the asphalt surface layer. The SMA asphalt mixture used in the middle of the runway is coarse aggregate structure with rough surface texture, good anti-rutting and anti-skid performance. This design and construction can maximize the service life of the runway and reduce maintenance work.
Four pavers were used for the pavement construction, closely followed by eight double-wheel rollers, and the runway pavement with a width of 45m was paved at a time, which greatly guarantees the pavement quality while reducing the number of construction joints.
With the gradual reduction of milling work, the paving time on site is increasing little by little and the daily completion quantity will increase substantially. It is expected that the whole runway surface will be completed within 10 days.
The overall quality for the pavement that has been completed is satisfactory, which was highly recognized by the supervisor, the owner and the airport side.
According to the general manager of TIA Rai Kumar Chettri, considering that the rainy season is in progress, the airport will remain open for 21 hours daily for two months.
The airport had to be closed for 10 hours daily to allow construction crews to work on the runway. The 3,050-metre-long runway has now been refurbished and covered with a new layer of asphalt.
The general manager of the airport
According to the airport authority, as the sole international airport in Nepal, the second phase of the project will be started from Sep. 1st to Dec 31st, which includes renovating the taxiway, and the airport will be closed for 8 hours daily--from 11:30 pm to 7:30 am next day.
And the renovation of the taxiway has also been planned for autumn, which is Nepal’s main tourism season.
According to the general manager of the airport Chettri, an 800-metre section at runway 02, or the Koteshwor side, is left to be rehabilitated. “If it doesn't rain, the work will be finished in three days,” he said. This is the most critical section of the runway due to its single approach system. Most of the cracks have been witnessed in this section due to the landing of heavy jets.
The runway and taxiway of Tribhuvan International Airport is being renovated in a Rs3.78-billion project. China’s state-owned enterprise China National Aero Technology International Engineering Corporation has received the rehabilitation contract.
Congestion has been a longstanding issue at Tribhuvan International Airport which handled 7.19 million passengers last year. There were a total of 129,511 flights over the Nepali skies, 74 percent of them domestic flights.
Airport authorities moved to improve the runway due to extreme pressure following frequent cracks in the pavement that raised safety concerns. For the last seven years, aircraft weighing more than 196 tonnes have been barred from the airport to prevent further damage to the runway. The old runway has been affecting smooth operation of aircraft due to repeated occurrences of cracks in the pavement.
While cracks and uneven surfaces can make take-offs and landings dangerous, airline officials said they had been facing hours-long delays almost every day during the rainy season, frustrating travelers and causing financial distress among airlines. Scores of flights have been diverted or delayed in recent years due to problems in the runway. Trouble mainly occurs during the rainy season. During the last monsoon, the runway developed cracks more than 30 times, according to the airlines.
A study conducted by the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal in 2014 concluded that the runway at the country’s sole international airport was not strong enough to handle wide-body jets due to its ageing asphalt foundation, and distress is caused to the upper surface instantly when heavy planes land on it. Repeated occurrences of cracks on the runway have been affecting smooth operation of aircraft since 2011.
Compared to the core part of the runway between 2006 and 2013, damage to the intermediate layers was caused by the operation of large jets like the Airbus A330 and Boeing 777, according to the country’s aviation regulator body. In 2013, there were 1,000 operations of A330-300 aircraft, 955 of Boeing 777 and 452 of A330-200, and the numbers are expected to double in the next 20 years.
Cracks first appeared on the runway in June 2011, and they have become a recurrent problem. Cracks were reported occasionally in 2012. The problem worsened in 2013, forcing the regulator, the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal, to take a harsh decision to declare the airport out of bounds to aircraft weighing more than 196 tonnes.
70 days has passed by since the official commencement of asphalt concrete construction for the runway of the Tribhuvan International Airport on Apr. 17th, 2019, and the phased target has been successfully fulfilled.
Up to now, the milling replacement layer with 50000T asphalt concrete for the entire runway, the runway surface layer with 27000T asphalt concrete, the Taxiway B with 20000T asphalt concrete have been completed. Besides, 2417 out of 3050 meters of the runway surface layer have been completed, which is significantly conducive to the runway quality improvement.
According to the requirements proposed by the owner, during the rainy season starting from July 1st to August 31st, the project department of AVIC-KDN will carry out foundation treatment and relevant drainage auxiliary works within 3-hour daily window period.
After September 1st, the remaining surface layer paving work with a length of 500 meters as well as the parallel taxiway reconstruction work will be implemented.
The runway reconstruction and renovation activities before the rainy season were completed as planned, which was congratulated by the owner, supervisors as well as airlines. Meanwhile, they fully affirmed and highly appraised the professional ability and the dedication contributed by our project department throughout the whole process.
The parties involved expect that our project department could make persistent efforts and continue to efficiently proceed the remaining work in terms of the parallel taxiway reconstruction project.
